Around 50 NX users turned out for our event on February 15th at Daimler Trucks North America. Eight presentations were given touching upon NX CAD, NX CAM, Teamcenter, the reuse library in NX, and upcoming features in NX.

Generously hosted by DTNA at their new glass building on Swan Island, the main room held our CAD and PLM sessions. In a separate conference room, we busted out our NX CAM breakout session, letting attendees focus on their primary interests.

DTNA was pleased to announce that this week, their new building had been awarded LEED Platinum Certification. Some of the greener features were evident, such as 100% outdoor air being provided to each space in the building. According to the building features team, white noise is added to the building, otherwise the building feels too quiet due to a lack of a running ventilation system.

Our Presentations:

  • First up was Tony Tam from DTNA, giving an overview of the corporation and its ongoing focus.
  • Bryan Riddle, CAD Methods Lead at Daimler Trucks North America, presented on NX Usage at DTNA.
  • Matt Martin, CAD application engineer at Applied CAx, presented on What's New in NX 11, Drafting & Modeling.
  • Michael Grant, director of manufacturing technologies at Applied CAx, presented on Multi-Axis Tool Vectors for Hard-to-Reach Machine Features in NX CAM.
  • Pat Barrett, director of CAD-CAM-PLM solutions for Applied CAx, presented on Advancements in NX11 to improve 3D Printing, and also gave a sneak peak at Generative Modeling in NX.
  • Erik Barber, technical account manager, wrapped up the session by presenting on the software, training and services available from Applied CAx.

Thanks to all of our attendees and presenters. We're hoping to keep the ball rolling and hold these sessions more often.

"I wanted to thank you for the NX Portland User Group, it was an amazing and beneficial experience for me. I participated in the user-group on behalf of Global Formula Racing here at Oregon State University, I'm a graduation senior in Industrial Engineering here at OSU.

Here at GFR we are preparing to switch to Siemens NX from CATIA V5; and beginning of 2017 both e-car and c-car models will be designed using Siemens NX (design process is a collaborative teamwork between our US side at OSU and German side at DHBW).

As part of my senior design project I'm working on CATIA V5 to NX10 preparation, documentation, and tutorials. So far we've had identified the possible bottle-necks as well as bench marking similar industries who have switched to Siemens NX. After attending the user-group I highly recommended your company to my adviser and teammates for future support of NX PLM for Global Formula Racing. I hope that Siemens NX and support of organizations like Applied CAx and Sherpa help GFR to continue wining competitions year after years."

- Amir Afrasiabi, Global Formula Racing at Oregon State University

More than 25 mechanical engineers, designers, data architects, and CAD enthusiasts networked April 21st at the Lucky Lab in NW Portland. Presentations and demos were shown on NX CAD, NX CAM, and NX CAE. The meeting group was for anyone using NX engineering software, aka Siemens PLM software, Unigraphics or UGS. The meeting was the beginning step to renewal of the Pacific Northwest PNW Regional User Group of PLM World.

Matt Martin, mechanical design engineer for Applied CAx and Sherpa Design, presented on "What's New in NX 11."

Michael Grant, director of manufacturing technologies for Applied CAx and Sherpa Design, presented on "Feature Based Machining."

Tim Nuckolls, Mechanical Engineer at ESI, presented on "Assembly Analysis Setup & Configuration."
