Visualization Templates intro graphic

By Matt Martin, CAD-PDM-PMI Application Engineer

When you’re taking screen shots for a presentation, project documentation or you just want to have a few different backgrounds for other purposes, navigating to File > Preferences > Background every time, every part can be tedious. Not to mention you have to remember the settings you want for your colors. NX helps by placing some canned backgrounds on the View Tab but they tend to be quite dark with greys and blacks.

Congratulations! Your company has decided that Model Based Definition (MBD) is the way of the future. Moving forward, it’s “easy” to leave behind the drawings and move to an MBD approach by using Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) in NX. But what do you do with all of your current model files without MBD/PMI? Do you create new PMI objects in the model similar to those annotations on your drawings?

In this online seminar wel look at Convert to PMI to convert drafting views and objects directly to corresponding model views and PMI objects. While there is no “easy button” to convert your entire product line or database over to MBD/PMI, as you up-revise your parts, you can easily bring them into compliance with new MBD initiatives your company has adopted.

As well, if you are a machine shop consuming NX drawings and part files, you can easily Convert to PMI to make programming your parts faster.

Check out our video to learn about pitfalls, caveats, and the occasional gotcha when it comes to updating legacy parts with Convert to PMI.

You may, at times, run into strange behavior in your NX model. Boolean will not execute properly, a face rule to pick up tangent faces will not pick up what appear to be tangent faces or body measurements just don’t seem to be correct. You may also notice when you zoom in that you see little spikes or cuts in the model. Sometimes Update Display will correct the visual representation but if the inconsistency remains, there may well be an issue with the geometry.

Step 1: Examine Geometry

Examine Geometry can be used to assist in finding the issues with your model. This tool can be found on your Analysis tab, the far right More pull down, Examine Geometry.

With the end of maintenance for NX10.0.3 approaching this November, now's a great time to join our NX CAD expert Matt Martin as he covers new NX 11 features. The updated user interface makes it easier to switch between parts you're working on, while at the same time maintaining the last working application of those parts.

For example, if you're working on the drawing for a part in the Drafting Application & need to make a modeling change, switching to the model will also change to the Modeling Application. No longer will you be banging your head against your monitor looking for Modeling tools while you're actually in Drafting. Finding the part you want is also improved by providing a preview of your parts as well as CTRL+TAB to access them.

In this NX engineering tips article, let’s look at installing and using the Siemens Machinery Library. The Siemens Machinery Library can be freely downloaded by anyone with current maintenance and WebKey. The library contains seed or template parts for common fasteners such as hex bolts, cap screws, nuts, pins and other commonly used mechanical parts. These parts are all Part Family parent templates used to create a family of fasteners of varying lengths and sizes.
