Case study: How Flyer Defense is pushing the boundaries of tactical mobility

September 10, 2025

For more than 30 years, Flyer Defense has been at the forefront of designing, manufacturing, and maintaining the most versatile all-terrain wheeled platform in the world. Trusted by U.S. special operations forces and global allies, Flyer Defense engineers for the most demanding environments on earth with a platform that delivers extreme mobility, versatility, and survivability where it matters most.

Operating in rugged terrain

Militaries operate in unforgiving landscapes that place immense strain on personnel and equipment. Flyer Defense recognized that to meet mission demands, vehicles needed to be reimagined.

“Today’s militaries operate in some of the most rugged terrain in the world,” Robert Rice, director of business development at Flyer Defense, said. “Traditionally, operating across this terrain takes an extreme toll on the human body. [We] design for extreme mobility, high versatility, and crew survivability.”

Innovation with Siemens Xcelerator

At its core, Flyer Defense is a design-driven company. Years of experience with global customers have shaped its proactive approach to R&D, creating highly modular and configurable vehicles that can evolve alongside changing requirements.

“Our commitment to innovation extends beyond our hardware,” Rice said. “We invest in advanced software capabilities that redefine how we operate effectively and efficiently.”

That innovation is powered by Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio. The Flyer Defense family of vehicles is designed entirely in NX and managed in Teamcenter. This gives the company a single source of truth for product data and reduces its manufacturing footprint.

“As vehicle systems become more complex, the risks to development programs become inherently higher,” Nic Frey, director of engineering at Flyer Defense, said. “Managing change within a single source of truth, Teamcenter PLM, allows us to mitigate risk due to obsolescence, environmental factors, and programmatic factors.”

Expertise from Applied CAx

Harnessing the full power of NX and Teamcenter required more than just software—it called for an expert partner. Applied CAx worked with Flyer Defense to audit the company’s systems, optimize its setup, and provide a roadmap for success.

“NX is an incredibly powerful CAD tool, and it can even be somewhat daunting,” Frey said. “Having a partner like Applied CAx has really helped us grasp the full potential in NX and Teamcenter. It has brought this extremely powerful tool within our reach and allowed us to leverage capabilities and features.”

For Flyer Defense, the collaboration has reinforced its mission to continually modernize platforms and push the limits of tactical mobility.

“As the battlefield continues to evolve, so do we. We have always been and continue to be steadfast in our mission to modernize our platforms and push the boundaries of what’s possible,” Rice said.
